Oatey 34045 Access Panel, 8-Inch x 8-Inch

Good With Some Encouragement
Installed with the proper steps this is a great product. I've ordered and installed five of them. To paint them, make sure you paint the two parts separately and give the paint time to cure before you work with it (as it will need to withstand some flexing). I used Benjamin Moore paint and it held more securely with some Killz primer, though the one I simply painted did wind up working out great after curing with a small touchup. In regard to folks who gummed it up, I'm not sure what they did. You wouldn't want to simply paint over it or (worse yet) roll over it, as that would fill the crevices with paint and obviously cause problems.

The product does come with a slight bow to it so it won't necessarily lay perfectly flat against the wall. When I installed it with Liquid Nails I had to prop a 2x4 across the bowed portion and lean some drywall against it to keep in in place. That was a bit of an annoyance and might cause trouble for people if they don't have something to...

Good access panel for a fair price.
I like the style and operation of the Oatey access panels. They are a clean look and a pretty basic design. They can be surface-mounted or flush-mounted in 5/8" drywall. I used them in a surface-mount install. I would buy them again.

Worked well
I mounted this on OSB wood in my garage. Just used a construction adhesive and worked great. However, the one complaint I have is the door doesn't sit flush... there's a little bulge. I used a heat gun to warm it up and bent it the opposite way so it then sat more flush. I would recommend to put the door in place before glueing so to make sure the opening is cut big enough so it is not warping the outer piece which you glue.
